Our 2024–25 season comes to a dramatic close with Symphonic Grandeur, an evening of masterworks that celebrate the power and beauty of symphonic music. Enjoy Mozart’s spirited fifth Violin Concerto featuring MSO Concertmaster Corey Gemmell, and Shostakovich’s powerful Fifth Symphony – Saturday, May 24 8:00PM at the Living Arts Centre.
MSO Concertmaster Corey Gemmell takes centre stage in Mozart’s fifth Violin Concerto, a work renowned for its lyrical beauty and spirited character. Often referred to as the “Turkish” concerto, it showcases Mozart’s gift for melodic invention and dramatic contrast, culminating in a striking final movement that blends refinement with flair.
Shostakovich’s fifth symphony is a cornerstone of 20th-century orchestral repertoire. Composed under intense political pressure, the symphony balances grandeur and restraint, moving from stark tension to a bold finale. It remains one of Shostakovich’s most powerful and enduring works.
“It’s a true pleasure to feature our concertmaster, Corey Gemmell, in this season finale. Corey is an exceptional musician whose insight and skill are ideally suited to Mozart’s fifth violin concerto. Paired with the drama of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, this concert will offer a thrilling finale to a truly wonderful season.” – Maestro Denis Mastromonaco – Artistic Director & Conductor
